TARPON

Tarpon fishing
The "Big Moe" of the Florida keys light tackle and fly fishermen! Tarpon are primarily a inshore fish but do go into the ocean when migrating and fish have been found far offshore in the late fall going south against the gulf stream. Average size is probably 90 to 100lbs. fish of 150lbs. or better are not uncommon so for the 1st timers a stout rod and reel should be used on these battlers, get a few under your belt than switch to lighter tackle! Fly fishing for Tarpon is a blast use a 12 wt. or 13 wt. fly rod with a reel that can hold 300 yds of backing. When they jump remember to "bow to the Silver King" that is lower your rod tip to the water that gives them slack so he doesn't throw the hook. Tarpon will eat a variety of bait from live mullet, shrimp, crabs, pinfish, everything under the sun. They eat dead bait equally well at times also. Since their eyes are on the top of their head remember they are always looking up, you see them they see you so stealth helps in tarpon fishing too.
